Nice Day Café to Host Blessings in a Backpack Fundraiser

Stop by the Nice Day Café this Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m for a fundraiser to help feed children in the Rochester and Oakland Township areas. Families can enjoy games, prizes, face painting, hot dogs, potato chips, pop and cupcakes – all while supporting a great cause.

Proceeds from the event will go to Blessings in a Backpack, a program that helps feed children who qualify for free or reduced lunches on weekends and during the summer in the Rochester Community Schools.

Star Wars characters will be in full uniform to play Nerf games with the children in the parking lot, located at Collins and Orion roads in Oakland Township (across from the Paint Creek Cider Mill). Goodison Family Chiropractic will have more games and prizes for kids, and face painting will be available by An Affair to Remember.

“Our goal at Nice Day Café is to support this great program and help it expand to all the children in our area who are in need of food on weekends and during the summer months,” Nice Day Café owner Michelle DeClercq said.

It costs approximately $100 to feed a child for an entire school year, according to a press release from Rochester Community Schools. Monetary donations and new or gently used backpacks are needed to support this program.

Last year, more than 2,000 students in Rochester schools qualified for the free or reduced lunch program. However, due to limited funding, only 200 elementary students from four elementary schools (the schools with the highest free/reduced lunch population) received the weekend meals.
