North Oakland Concert Band Takes To the Skies
The North Oakland Concert Band (NOCB) presents its Spring concert entitled The Sky’s the Limit! on Sunday May 6th, 2012 at 4:00 pm at the Rochester High School Auditorium, 180 S. Livernois Road in Rochester Hills.
The NOCB will share the stage with the Rochester Adams High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by James Ferden. The program will also include special guest artist, oboist Nancy Ambrose King.
Conductor Annette Kline leads the North Oakland Concert Band in a high-flying program featuring works for concert band with a definite ‘wide blue yonder’ theme. Prominent on the program is Robert Smith’s On Eagle’s Wings, a soaring work dedicated to “Our Citizen Airmen,” the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Aerodynamics by David Gilliman celebrates the successful first flight of the Wright brothers in 1903. Drawing on the tales of Norse mythology, Steven Reineke’s Fate of the Gods, evokes the legends of Valhalla, the home of the gods and the flight of their winged horses. From Holst’s The Planets the band offers their interpretation of Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.
Guest artist Nancy Ambrose King will turn her considerable instrumental skills to a rendition of Variations on a Theme by Glinka, by Rimsky-Korsakov. This work for oboe and military band will show the virtuosity of Ms. King, who was the first-prize winner of the Third New York International Competition for Solo Oboists, held in 1995. She has performed extensively with orchestras both at home and abroad. Currently Professor of Oboe at the University of Michigan, she continues to perform and to receive numerous awards.
The Rochester Adams High School Wind Ensemble will take to the stage with several selections including Suite Provençal by Jan Van der Roost, Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral by Wagner, and they will conclude with Where Never Lark Or Eagle Flew, by the popular James Curnow.
The two bands will combine to perform Americans We, by Henry Fillmore, a combination of forces that will showcase the sounds of over one hundred musicians.
The North Oakland Concert Band has been providing free concerts to the local community for over 30 years. Based in Lake Orion, the band members travel from all over the Metro Detroit area to play in this top-level community band under the direction of Annette Kline.
