Spring Cleaning? Dispose Of Unwanted Items Locally

Heather Muzzy, chair of the Orion Township Environmental Resources Committee, submitted the following content:

Just in case your spring cleaning turns up items that are too nice for the curbside garbage or recycling The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan and Habitat For Humanity Detroit - Restore gladly accept items that are still usable! If your item or the project is big enough, they will even bring a truck to you!

For items not "fit" for further use, Orion residents are able to take advantage of Free Disposal Days twice a year. Eagle Valley landfill on Silver Bell Road is open this Saturday, June 2 from 7am to 1pm. They cannot accept yard waste, whole tires, hazardous waste nor any white goods that do or even once contained freon.

The next opportunity to properly dispose of household hazardous waste is also this Saturday at Oakland University from 8am to 2pm. The Oakland County NO HAZ event info website was just redesigned and includes details of what is and is not accepted. Depending on your community, you may need to copay $10 (toward the cost of processing) or get a voucher in advance.

All residents are encouraged to consider the area businesses that increasingly accept many items at little or no charge and with much more convenience! Please see the Orion Township Environmental Page for a list of local locations accepting CFLs, electronics, batteries and automotive fluids. As more people take advantage of the business drop off options, the tax payer and environmental burden will be reduced.
