Lake Orion Varsity Spotlight: Girls’ Varsity Volleyball

Despite losing eight seniors last year, two all-state players and 1 all-state honorable mention, the season has been going great explained Ross Talbott, Lake Orion Varsity Volleyball coach.

With a record of 20-6 so far this year, the Lake Orion girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team is quickly gaining momentum.

Despite losing eight seniors last year, two all-state players and 1 all-state honorable mention, the season has been going great explained Ross Talbott, Lake Orion Varsity Volleyball coach.

“We won the Dakota tourney beating them in the finals and they have been ranked first in the state by the MIVCA coaches poll,” said Talbott, LO girls’ Varsity Volleyball Coach.  “We’ve had good wins over Novi twice, Marian, and Dakota. The team is currently ranked 6th in this MIVCA poll, and have been all the way up to 4th,” he continued.

The team consists of nine seniors, six juniors and two sophomores. Leading the Dragons are captains defensive specialist Rachel Livingway, middle hitter Sophie Murdock, and setter Rebecca Sylvain. Talbott explained how each of the girls look up to one another and the captains lead by example.

The Dragons will be working hard to perfect their game and attitude for the rest of the season.

“We will be working on a lot on defense, siding out, and execution,” Talbott explained. “We have been installing discipline in practice, unselfishness on and off the court, and working with each other as a team.”

Talbott hopes to be the first Dragons volleyball team to win the OAA red division, and get back to Battle Creek for the state finals.

“We have been working hard in practice, and we have a lot of talent all the way down our seventeenth player. We have the best coaching staff around and probably the best in state with assisting varsity, Tony Scavarda, Johnny Kalugar, Angela Brooks, and Missy McCaualey. We are looking forward to good things from this team, we still have a long way to go to get there, but sky is the limit for us,” Talbott concluded.
