UPDATED: 51 North Brewing Company Reopens in Time for Super Bowl Sunday

Plumbing problems forced the new restaurant and brewery in Lake Orion to temporarily shut down this weekend.

51 North Brewing Company in Lake Orion reopened just in time for the Super Bowl crowd on Sunday evening after being forced to shut down over the weekend due to plumbing problems.

The new downtown restaurant and brewery reopened at 5 p.m. Sunday, 51 North team member Barb Makowski said.

51 North's toilets first backed up during its soft opening Jan. 25, but they were cleared out and business continued, co-owner Don Gindhart of Troy said earlier Sunday. However, the problem reoccurred Friday night and the establishment had to be closed for repairs.

"It was heartbreaking," Gindhart said. "We had a full house."

Repairmen discovered that during construction a hole accidentally was punched in the building's plumbing pipe, which subsequently collapsed, Gindhart said. The problem didn't become apparent until 51 North was operating at full capacity, he said.

Crews had ripped up concrete and plumbing and were working frantically on repairs Sunday morning so the brewery could be open during the Super Bowl, Gindhart said.

"(The shutdown and repairs were) really expensive, so people need to get on up here and give us their money," he joked.

51 North Brewing Company is located at 51 N. Broadway St., Lake Orion, MI 48362. Call 248-690-7367 or visit 51northbrewing.com/ for more information.
