Save Money, Shop Sales: Books, Home Accessories and More

A used book sale, Mom to Mom and community sale take place this week around Oakland Township.

After an expensive December and midway through a dreary weather, who wouldn't want to take advantage of sales in the area?

Throughout Oakland Township this week, salegoers can expect to find gently used books, children's clothes, toys, decorations and much more. Here are three sales highlighted in our Events Calendar through the week and weekend:

1. Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library Used Book Sale

  • Where: Rochester Hills Public Library's Multipurpose Room
  • When: Thursday-Sunday for general public. Friends of the RHPL may attend from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday for a preview sale. Public hours for the sale are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday.
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: With oodles of books for sale, you're bound to find a great read for yourself or a loved one in your life. The sale offers a wide range of genres, authors and reading levels. Most books cost 50 cents to $1, and DVDs and books on CDs will also be for sale. Saturday is the library's half-price sale, and on Sunday, buy books for just $5 for a bag.

2. Great Everything Sale

  • Where: Rochester Community House
  • When: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. An early bird special sale takes place from 8-9 a.m. Friday.
  • Cost: Admission is free, with the exception of the early bird special sale Friday — admission to that costs $5.
  • Why go: If you're missing the excitement of going to summer garage sales and scoping out some great buys, the Great Everything Sale is the place to be. Household items, games, furniture, designer clothes and jewelry can be found at the sale, along with many other items. As the title suggests, a little bit of everything will be for sale at this large, community indoor garage sale.

3. Mom to Mom Sale

  • Where: Brooklands Elementary School, 490 E. Auburn Rd. in Rochester Hills.
  • When: 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
  • Cost: $2 for early birds between 9:30-10 a.m. and $1 per adult after 10 a.m. Free for children.
  • Why go: If you have small children at home, a grandchild on the way or if your best friend is pregnant, stop by and see what the Mom to Mom sale has to offer. There will be lots of tables with children's clothing, toys, larger items and more. The Growing Tree, a nonprofit organization based in Rochester Hills, is hosting the event. Mom to Mom sales allow the Growing Tree to raise funds to support its mission to assist veterans, special needs adults, recovering addicts and young adults who are too old for the foster care system. Proceeds from this sale will go into its scholarship program. For more information on The Growing Tree, visit thegrowingtreemichigan.com.
