Weekend Planner: Fireworks, Scottish Highland Games and More
There is plenty going on in Oakland Township and Lake Orion this weekend to keep you entertained.
Ready for some big fireworks?
Friday night venture to Addison Oaks County Park campground, located at 1480 W. Romeo Road in Leonard and watch fireworks shoot into the sky shortly after dusk. It is $10 per vehicle to park at Addison Oaks, or free with a 2012 annual vehicle permit to Oakland County Parks.
Lake Orion's annual fireworks display will take place at dusk on Saturday night. Get as close as you can to the lake (the fireworks will be shot off from a barge) to see the fantastic display. If it rains on Saturday the fireworks will be rescheduled for July 7.
Run for a cause
With the help of Orion Township and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Sister Souls is hosting a 5K on Saturday. Sister Souls, Inc. is a Lake Orion based nonprofit organization that strives to benefit children in need. The group has set out to raise $100,000 over a 10 month period of time for three Lake Orion children, known as Lake Orion Loves, who are fighting terminal diseases.
Help the nonprofit reach its goal by participating in the 5K Souls to Soles Run/Walk, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in Civic Center Park. Online registration ends at 7 a.m. the day of the race. Registration is $25 for adults and $10 for children 12-years-old and younger. To register for the event visit www.sistersouls-eorg.eventbrite.com. Check-in is scheduled for 8-8:45 a.m. Saturday at the park.
Scottish Highland Games and Festival
The Scottish American Society of Michigan will be hosting its second annual Highland Games and Festival at Canterbury Village from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. The festival is fun for the whole family and costs $5 per person and is free for children 5-years-old and under.
There will be a kids craft area, moonwalks, face painting, Scottish dance demonstrations, a Scottish pipe band performing, heavy athletics, Irish dance demonstrations and more. For more information visit www.scotsofmichigan.com.
