Oakland Township Clean Scene

45th ANNUAL CLEAN SCENE - SATURDAY, MAY 3RD, 2014

Saturday, May third’s wet and cool weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the seventy eight volunteers who took part in Oakland Township’s 45th annual Clean Scene. Each year residents help to clean township roads of the debris uncovered when winter’s snow carpet finally melts. Organized by Trustee Maureen Thalmann and the Township’s Planning Coordinator Elaine Leven, the event begins with registration, bag pick up and coffee at the Township Hall. Volunteers spread out to assigned roads for trash collection. Filled bags are left on the side of the road and other volunteers drive their personal vehicles to carry the bags back to the trash compactor waiting in the Township Hall parking lot. This year’s volunteers were able to report that of the people who choose to make deposits along the township’s roads Marlboro is the favorite cigarette, Skoal the preferred chewing tobacco, and Budweiser the beer of choice.

After gathering trash for several hours, all the volunteers gather for lunch and camaraderie back at Town Hall. Refreshments were generously donated by local merchants: the Paint Creek Cider Mill, Victoria’s Delights of Goodison and Oxford, Subway Store #51139 in Oakland Township, Kroger of North Adams Road, the Westwynd Grille at the Westwynd Golf Course, Busch’s Market, Sam’s Club, and Hollywood Market. Additional thanks to Waste Management for their donation of trash bags and beverages.

Residents who were unable to attend this year’s event can do their part by keeping the roadside along their own property clear of debris. Remember to take a plastic bag along for spring and summer walks and collect the trash tossed by careless motorists.

Special thanks to Supervisor Terry Gonser and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Ann Marie Rogers for event day help.

Mark your 2015 calendar for the first Saturday of May and help your fellow residents keep our township beautiful!

Anyone can volunteer. Youth and scout groups are welcome and can earn community service credits. Please wear hard soled shoes, work gloves and clothes appropriate for the weather conditions. Clean Scene is a rain or shine event.

Get involved, gather your groups, friends, and co-workers to improve the appearance of township roads, and get to know your neighbors.
