5 Teen Artists Receive Scholarships for Exceptional Work

Students from Lake Orion, Stoney Creek and Oxford high schools were awarded $500 each as part of the Joan Brace Scholarship Awards.

Congratulations to five area high school seniors, given $500 each as part of the annual Joan Brace Scholarship Awards.

Luiza Alaniz of received the top honor, the Joan Brace Award for a sculpture titled ‘Ramzy the Dancer.’ She’ll be attending the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida for computer animation.

Heidi Auvenshine of Oxford High School and Jazmin Biernat of were awarded scholarships funded by . Auvenshine won for her charcoal drawing ‘Safari’ and Biernat for her photograph ‘Vulnerability.’

Also taking home a scholarship for photography was Andrew Schultz who entered a series of images on phobias. Schulz attended Lake Orion High School. Michelle Veillete from Stoney Creek High School won for her self portrait in colored pencil titled ‘Imagination.’ Both were awarded scholarships from The Clark Fund.

Students pursuing a college art degree compete for the annual awards. “There are scholarships for athletics and academics, but few for talented young artists,” says OAC Director Lauren Dinneweth. “We are proud to help these students pursue their creativity and their dreams.”

The scholarship awards are named for Joan Brace, a founding member of the Orion Art Center and advocate for young artists. Get more information at www.orionartcenter.org.
