Auditions Open at Oakland Youth Orchestras April 1

Rochester, MI, March 29—Do you know of a student with a love of music and a desire for more than his or her school music program offers?  Auditions for Oakland Youth Orchestras will take place on weekends, April 19 through May 19 at Oakland University, Varner Hall. Audition signup begins April 1 online at www.oyomi.org

Imagine your student spending their next school season under the tutelage of accomplished musicians with extensive performance and music education backgrounds and get to perform in three major concerts with award winning solo artists and conductors.

Auditions allow Oakland Youth Orchestras to create the best conditions for learning and to maintain standards of excellence.  Students will have the opportunity to join over 325 other students from three counties, 37 communities, 25 school districts, and 16 private schools from Southeast Michigan. All returning and prospective OYO members must audition.

OYO is a four-tiered orchestra program:

  • Studio String: Advanced Beginner
  • String: Intermediate
  • Philharmonia: Advanced Intermediate
  • Symphony: Advanced

“We are always excited about the spring auditions,” says OYO executive director, Joanne Walley. “So often we uncover children with an exceptional love of music and talent—from private, parochial, and home schools to more than 25 public school districts in the Greater Detroit Area.”

About Oakland Youth Orchestras

The mission of OYO is to inspire student musicians by providing an exceptional orchestral experience. Oakland Youth Orchestras has been educating and enriching youth through music since 1975.  OYO is a four-tiered orchestra program serving an increasing population of over 325 students in grades two through twelve from throughout southeast Michigan. These students desire to be challenged beyond their school musical experience, and OYO fosters enrichment through opportunities in music theory, chamber music, community outreach performance and competitions. The four levels include Studio String, String, Philharmonia and Symphony orchestras. Every season, Oakland Youth Orchestra holds three major concerts with all students in participation—in November, February and May at the Oxford Fine Arts Center.  OYO is supported in part with grants from the Michigan Council of the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.  For more information about Oakland Youth Orchestras or for an Audition Guide, visit www.oyomi.org.
