5 Places to Cool Down in the Lake Orion-Oakland Township Area

It's summer and it's hot out. Here's where you can cool off.

If you don't have air conditioning – or if you maybe just want to get out of the house without getting sweaty – here are a few places you can go around Oakland Township and Lake Orion to cool off.

1. Paint Creek Cider Mill

Stop by the Paint Creek Cider Mill, 4480 Orion Road, for some cool ice cream, beautiful surroundings and a mid-afternoon snack.

2. Orion Township Public Library

With plenty of books and activities scheduled throughout the summer (click here for a calendar), the Orion Township Public Library offers a nice reprieve from the heat.

3. Grab Some FroYo

The Rochester area has an abundance of frozen yogurt shops. Here are some options:

  • Sweet Island Yogurt: Bill Brandreth and Larry Winkelmann opened owntown Rochester's only frozen yogurt shop last year.
  • Bloomberry Yogurt: It's located in the Papa Joe's plaza at Rochester and Tienken roads.
  • Yummie Yogurt: It's in the works at the Village of Rochester Hills this summer. Yummie Yogurt is a family-owned shop based in Farmington Hills.
  • Yogurt City Frozen Yogurt: This shop is opening soon in the Target plaza on Rochester Road. It's one of five Michigan locations for the national yogurt shop planned this year.
  • TCBY: It's name implies it's "The Country's Best Yogurt." It is located in the Hollywood Market plaza at the corner of Tienken and Rochester roads.
  • CoolYo Frozen Yogurt: Located in the Buddy's Plaza across from Oakland University
  • Orange Leaf: Orange Leaf, based in Oklahoma City, opened in the plaza anchored by Big Boy and Bar Louie, near Urban Dog.

4. Get Shelter at the OPC

Senior citizens can stay cool at the OPC, 650 Letica Drive in Rochester, which offers programs and services for senior citizens in the area. Membership is free for residents, though there is a $6 cost for a membership card. The center features a track, gymnasium, pool, library, cafeteria, woodshop and auditorium.

5. Grab a Cold, Locally Made Brew

For our readers 21 years of age and older, why not grab a cold brew at 51 North Brewery? The beer and meads are brewed on-site at the brewery, 51 N. Broadway in downtown Lake Orion. View a menu here.
