Update: Snow Falling; Heaviest Part of Storm Expected to Start at 8 Tonight

A winter storm warning has been issued for the area effective 4 p.m. tonight till 7 a.m. Monday.

So much for that patch of green grass this weekend. Snow began falling across the Rochester area around 3:30 p.m. Sunday; according to the National Weather Service the area is in the midst of a winter storm warning through Monday morning.

The city of Auburn Hills issued a snow emergency — no parking on those streets — but as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday, no such warning had been issued in Rochester or Rochester Hills.

Students in Rochester are in the middle of a four-day President's Day weekend; there already was no school planned Monday or Tuesday.

The most intense precipitation with the storm is predicted to start at 8 p.m. and last until 2 a.m. Monday. Heavy snow and "significant icing" is expected. A total of 4 to 8 inches of snow and ice are possible, according to the weather statement. The ice will happen mostly around Detroit, with more snow in the northern cities, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is a result of the warm, moist air we experienced this past week mixing with a cold blast of arctic air from the north. It is expected to move quickly through the Midwest and out to the east coast.
