Orion Township Soccer Field to be Named in Honor of Gerald Bieser

The Orion Township Board of Trustees approved dedicating the Friendship Park field to the late active community member and soccer enthusiast.

Along with dedicating at Monday night’s meeting, the Orion Township Board of Trustees voted in favor of naming one of the park’s soccer fields in honor of Gerald Bieser.

Bieser of Orion passed away at the age of 72 in March. A resolution was passed during a meeting on Nov. 17, 2008, stating that Bieser would "be considered for the honor of having a soccer field named for him as fields are constructed in the future." The family recently reached out to the township again, now that there are unnamed soccer fields at , seeking approval of dedicating one of those fields to Bieser.

“The township has a long-standing policy of naming athletic fields and other facilities in honor or memory of certain people or organizations,” Supervisor JoAnn Van Tassel said at the meeting.

Bieser was an active community member and soccer enthusiast. He served on the Orion Township Safety Path Advisory Committee, lived in Orion Township since 1970 and worked as a soccer coach and referee for many years. Bieser help create the Orion/Oxford Soccer League and also kick started the first soccer program at .

The November resolution with the description of Bieser states "(Bieser) has been involved in almost every facet of helping soccer grow and develop into the sport that it is today within our community."

His family was unable to attend the meeting Monday to comment on the dedication.
