Possible Record High Temps Prompt Heat Advisory, Ozone Action Day

Actual temperatures could reach 100 degrees in Oakland County today.

High temperatures were expected to reach 95-100 degrees in Oakland County today, prompting the National Weather Service in Pontiac to issue a heat advisory from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

At 2 p.m., according to Weather Underground, which tracks local weather data, the temperature was 101.1 degrees.

Heat index values were expected to hover near 100 degrees for much the afternoon, according to the weather service.

Those who are prone to heat stress may be in danger, and all residents are encouraged to avoid strenuous activity outdoors that may lead to heat injuries like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Residents are also encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

The heat advisory is issued in conjunction with an air quality alert from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, prompting an Ozone Action Day. Elevated levels of ozone and pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range today.

Residents in Oakland County are advised to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, including using gasoline-powered lawn equipment, refuelling or topping off vehicles when refueling and using charcoal lighter fluid. Residents are also encouraged to carpool, delay unnecessary errands and use water-based paints today.
