“It’s tons of fun; it’s our biggest event of the year,” said Karrie Roever, marketing coordinator for the library.

The summer reading program is broken into three different categories: Dream Big – Read for kids, Between the Covers for adults and Teen’s Own the Night for teens. Over the course of the summer, until the beginning of August, readers will keep track of how much reading they do by recording it on the library’s websit, and will be awarded prizes at the end of the summer according to how much they read.

Kids can choose if they want to record the number of hours they read, or the number of books they read. Roever said there are ways for younger children, who have not learned how to read yet, to earn prizes as well.

“Readers can choose any book, eBook, audiobook or magazine to count toward their progress,” Roever said.

Roever said about 2,0000 people participate in the reading program every year. The largest participation rate comes from children, with many adults and teens reading in their various categories as well.

“It keeps their reading levels up and keeps their minds working,” Roever said. “Kids that read during the summer can go back to school without missing a beat. For the adults I think that they are reading anyway so this just encourages them to read even more.”

Along with prizes, readers will be awarded with end-of-the-season parties in August. The seniors will have a tea party, teens will be able to spend the night at the library and children and adults will have a combined gathering with a paperback book swap, juggler and more.
