VIDEO: Why 'Freaky Deaky' Crew Loves Oakland Township

Crews are filming "Freaky Deaky" in Oakland Township over the course of several weeks.

It's not every day you or at your local pharmacy, but lately, it's happening a lot more around here.

On Friday, crew members of the Elmore Leonard film Freaky Deaky to get a behind-the-scenes look at film-making in Michigan.

And when asked why they chose this location, crew members couldn't say enough about Oakland Township and the surrounding areas.

"Oakland Township has been amazing," assistant locations manager Teena Constas said. "We're doing some driving scenes Monday, and (the sheriff's office) is just bending over backwards trying to accommodate us."

"There's no better," Executive Producer Bob Cantrell said. "This is an outstanding location, an outstanding set. It was almost as though what we found here mapped against what Elmore Leonard wrote in his book originally, which took place in southeast Michigan."

Cantrell added, "This has been great, excellent. We're delighted to be here."

Freaky Deaky is under the direction of Charlie Matthau, who it would be made entirely in Michigan, where Leonard lives.

"We originally changed the locale to L.A., but I knew it wouldn't be as good as if it were set in Detroit," Matthau said in a statement reported on Birmingham Patch during the Elmore Leonard Film Festival in November.

"Freaky Deaky can turn into a monument in Detroit, just like Woody Allen's Manhattan is for New York … If ever there was a film for Detroit, it's Freaky Deaky."

Last summer, Demi Moore and the cast of A Reasonable Bunch filmed at a home in Oakland Township and also spent several consecutive days filming in downtown Rochester.
