Weekend Planner: Community Garage Sale, Summer Reading and 5K for a Fallen Teacher

Here's your guide to the weekend in Oakland Township and Lake Orion.

There's plenty going on this weekend around town. Here are some of the highlights:

From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday people of all ages are invited to the Summer Reading Kick-Off. Kids and adults interested in registering for the summer reading program will be able to do so on-site. The event will take place outside of the library and will feature a dunk tank, massages, music, food, crafts and much more.

This weekend more than 40 families will be setting up tables at to participate in Orion Township's Annual Closet Clean-Out Community Garage Sale. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday bargain shoppers can venture to the park to find everything from household goods to toys, furniture and more.

is hosting its Successfully Single Annual Golf Outing at 6 p.m. Friday. Cost to participate in the nine-hole scramble is $59 and includes golf, door prizes, a goodie bag and buffet dinner. Reservations, which are required, can be made online at www.successfulysingle.org or by calling (248) 289-6406.

From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday you can tour the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition at (competition tents are located at the corner of Adams and Walton.) One-hour tours are free and are for students interested in science, technology and math to areas of robotics, defense and the automotive industries.

The late was an avid runner who shared her love of running with her three children and students. This benefit run at in Rochester Hills has been organized in her honor. It includes a 5K competitive race and a 1-mile fun run/walk. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday; the run begins at 9 a.m. All proceeds benefit the Health, Welfare and Education of the Jarrell Children fund.  Register ($20) or donate online here.  

This week's vendor of the week is Breadwinner Bakery: all scones and muffins are $1 off from the Rochester bakery. Dozens of vendors will be selling everything from plants and flowers to produce from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
