Detroit Police Seize 3 Handguns from Silvercreek Subdivision Home

Oakland County Sheriff's officers from Oakland Township assist in executing a search warrant for firearms at the home.

Detroit Police seized three guns from an Oakland Township home in the Silvercreek subdivision while executing a search warrant for firearms that may have been used in a fatal shooting in Detroit.

Oakland County Sheriff's officers from the Oakland Township Substation assisted in the raid. "It was their operation," said Deputy Terry Cashman, one of those who assisted in the Friday morning raid. “I went inside; I was right behind them.”

Cashman explained "they needed somebody in uniform there, because everybody else was plain-clothes. Typically, they like to have at least one uniform for anything like that so the people don’t doubt that it’s the police.”

Detective David Bach joined Cashman in assisting Detroit Police. "We knocked multiple times," Bach said. "We knocked and knocked and knocked; no answer."

After about five minutes, Detroit Police kicked in the door and found the resident sitting in his bedroom, Bach said. "He stated he was sleeping and did not hear the knocking," he said.

"They said, ‘police,’ and he said ‘yeah, OK, OK, I’m coming out,’ and he came out," Cashman said. "It’s a good thing he cooperated; he had a sawed-off shotgun right next to the bed."

“We just had him come on out," Bach said. "He just sat in a chair while the search warrant was executed."

Detroit Police seized three guns from the residence, according to the report. The guns were "all handguns, all registered to the renter, who also has a valid concealed weapons license,” Bach said.

The resident, who was home alone at the time of the search, was not arrested, but Bach said he remains a "person of interest" in the homicide investigation by Detroit Police.

“We’re always willing to cooperate with another department in an investigation," said Sgt. Anthony Spencer, commander of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Substation in Oakland Township.
