A 60-year-old Lake Orion man was killed Sunday night when he was struck by a car on South Broadway, according to police.
At approximately 8:35 p.m., Lake Orion police received a 911 call reporting that a man was walking west on the street near the Valero gas station. The concerned caller told police the pedestrian was walking in and out of the roadway from the sidewalk, police said.
Officers responded within two minutes of the call, finding the man unresponsive near the west side of the road after he was hit by a car traveling southbound. A bystander, who is a nurse, stopped to help, police said.
Lake Orion police, Oxford police and the Oakland
County Sheriff’s Office crash investigation unit responded to the accident.
A preliminary investigation found that the man tripped or fell onto the road near the curb lane on the west side of the street. He was then struck by a 2012 Chevy Malibu driven by a 17-year-old Oxford boy with a 16-year-old female passenger, also from Oxford, police said.
The pedestrian had been crossing the road away from the marked crosswalk and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, police said.
Both vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts. The investigation is ongoing and the pedestrian's name was not immediately released, pending notification of family.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or anyone with additional information is asked to call the Lake Orion Police Department at 248-693-8321.
