Man Arraigned on Charges of Indecent Exposure at Children's Park

Richard Aaron Sherman, a 28-year-old Orion Township man, was arraigned Wednesday in 52-3 District Court on charges of indecent exposure after being accused of exposing himself to a mother and her young daughter in in downtown Lake Orion.

On Monday evening, the was contacted by the Orion Township woman, who reported that a man had just exposed himself to her, according to Lake Orion Police Chief Jerry Narsh.

According to Narsh, the woman described the man as wearing a pair of shorts that were torn from the leg all the way up to the waist. While the woman was sitting at a picnic table in Children's Park with her daughter, the man allegedly turned around toward them and made a motion with his leg when he got within 10 feet of them, said Narsh. The woman said the man stared at her while making the motion with his leg, drawing attention to an opening in his shorts and completely exposing himself.

"As soon as she saw what was occurring she made sure her child was not in position to view it and immediately left the park," Narsh said.

A short time later the Lake Orion Police arrested Sherman, who matched the description the woman had given the police and was in close proximity to the park. He was cited for indecent exposure and taken to the Oakland County Jail.

Sherman was arraigned on an indecent exposure charge on Wednesday. The indecent exposure charge carries a one-year misdemeanor sentence and/or a $1,000 fine. If there is a conviction it will most likely be considered a sex offense as well, said Narsh.

Sherman's pre-trial is set for 8:30 a.m. May 23 with Judge Julie Nicholson.

According to Narsh, this is the first indecent exposure incident to his knowledge at Children's Park.

"We usually have little, if any, problems in that park," Narsh said. "It's typically a very safe and fun park to be at."
