Second Suspect Arraigned in Hammer Attack on Cab Driver

Jessica McMeans was arrested last week in connection with the alleged armed robbery of a Lake Orion cab driver. Her co-defendant, Rene Apalagui, will be sentenced in January.

Lake Orion Township Police have arrested a second suspect has been arrested in a June 22 carjacking in which the alleged assailants reportedly attacked a cab driver with a hammer and robbed him of $50.

Jessica McMeans was arrested by Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies in Pontiac on Dec. 4, and was arraigned on the following day in 52-3 District Court. Magistrate Nicole Camargo set a $50,000 cash bond and a pre-exam conference on Dec. 12 before District Judge Lisa Judge Asadoorian

Previously arrested in the alleged carjacking and assault was Rene Apalategui, who pleaded guilty to armed robbery in the 6th Circuit Court.  Apalagui will be sentenced Jan. 15.

Investigators said Apalagui was a had a drug habit and that the attack on the cab driver was related to a recent drug binge. He was found hiding in a couch at the Waldon Lake Apartment in Orion Township after a July 3 incident in which he reportedly threatened his girlfriend, who fled the apartments and called the sheriff’s department.
