Census 2010: Population Explosion in Oakland Township

The state may be losing population, but Oakland Township's population has grown from 13,071 in 2000 to 16,779 in 2010.

The population of Oakland Township has jumped 28.4 percent in the past 10 years, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau. 

In fact, Oakland Township experienced the largest-percentage population increase in the entire county, from 13,071 in 2000 to 16,779 in 2010. Oxford Township and also experienced large increases in population, whereas , , , and all lost residents between 2000 and 2010.

In addition to the increase in population,  Oakland Township also is becoming more ethnically diverse. In 2000, 94 percent of Oakland Township's population was white, 2.6 percent was Asian, 2 percent was Black or African American and 1.2 percent considered themselves to be culturally Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, 90 percent of the population was white, 5.4 percent was Asian, 2.4 percent was Black or African American and 2.1 percent considered themselves to be culturally Hispanic or Latino.

The township population itself is also aging. In 2000, 69.5 percent of the population was over the age of 18; in 2010, that percentage jumped to 73.

This loosely follows a trend seen in Oakland County, where the white population has decreased by 6 percent, the Asian population for the county has increased 37 percent, and the Black or African American population increased by 36 percent since between 2000 and 2010.

Though the state's population decreased by 0.5 percent, Oakland County's population increased by .7 percent, and several Oakland County communities saw an increase in their population. For more regional census information, .
