Lake Orion Water Levels To Be Lowered Next Week

The Village of Lake Orion will begin to temporarily lower the water levels on Lake Orion by 36 inches on Sept. 10, which means boaters may need to get off the lake for the next couple months.

This is to allow the Village to inspect the dam and give residents around the lake the opportunity to repair their seawalls.

The Village recently applied to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The DEQ has acknowledged receipt of the application. The Village will lower the lake less than one-inch per day and will begin re-filling of the lake Nov. 12.

Boaters need to be aware that once the Village begins to lower the lake, they may be unable to be on the lake. Failure to act in a timely manner may result in being unable to move their boats until the lake is re-filled.

Homeowners around the lake are encouraged to apply now for any Department of Environmental Quality permit they may need to do work on their seawall or beach area.

Lowering water levels will give Lake Orion boaters an opportunity to get a jump start on preparing for the winter.
