5 Things to Know About the 2011 Lake Orion School Board Election

A handy guide to today's Lake Orion School Board election.

  1. The candidates for four-year terms: Twelve candidates are vying for four four-year terms. They are Mark Brackon, Terrie Campbell, Joe Knight, Terry Lang, Birgit McQuiston, Connie Meech, John Michalik, Kelly Weaver (incumbent), Janet Wolverton (incumbent), Deborah Porter, Melissa Miller and Daniel Myslakowski.   2. The candidates for two-year terms: Two candidates are vying for a single two-year seat. They are write-in candidate Bob Gritzinger (incumbent) and Steven Drakos.
  3. The issues: Lake Orion Schools needs to cut $7.5 million from the district budget for the upcoming school year. The district also faces financial challenges from the state of Michigan funding cuts. In addition, voters turned down a $25.5 million bond in February that would have funded improvements in technology, security, buses and buildings.
  4. Poll Hours: Polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday.
