Most schools have some sort of orientation night for freshmen. But Lake Orion High School leaders wanted to do more.
That's why freshman at the school participate in a practice first day; they arrived at the high school Thursday morning. Buses were available to pick them up, and they ran through their entire schedule, met their teachers and had their lunch schedules explained to them. The buses then returned them home. The whole experience lasted about two and a half hours.
The purpose of the morning was to allow all freshmen the opportunity to experience high school life without the upper classmen in the building. Students attended all of their classes in order to become familiar with their lockers and classroom locations in the building and have an opportunity to meet their teachers. They also received information about school rules, dress codes and procedures.
“I’m so excited to start high school,” Jim Hanthorn, Lake Orion High School freshman said. “It’s a new environment, new people, new teachers and you get treated differently – more like an adult.”
Teachers who do not have freshmen, along with a group of upperclassmen mentors, supervised and assisted students in the locker pods and hallways.
