Little Guests Delight School Board Members With Stories

A bullying presentation and technology policy reading also highlight Wednesday's meeting in Lake Orion.

Every year members of the Lake Orion Board of Education read to students throughout the district as part of Reading Month celebrations.

Last night the tables turned as students took the opportunity to read to board members.

Two students brought their favorite books to Wednesday's meeting at the district's . kindergarten student Callen Mitchell plopped himself in a chair in front of the board members and sweetly told them a story about a mouse. Elise Joshua, a second-grade student from Webber Elementary School, was animated while reading her book, The Pidgeon Wants a Puppy, to the board members.

Each special guest was treated with a round of applause after showing off his or her reading skills.

"That was wonderful and they did a much better job than I did reading to the fifth-grade today," Trustee Meslissa Miller said. "I was very much impressed."

Likewise, Superintendent Marion Ginopolis said, "Our two readers were just delightful."

More highlights from Wednesday's meeting include:

  • An in-depth presentation and update on the initiative was delivered at the meeting.
  • The first reading for a policy revision for use of personal technology devices while school is in session was approved.
  • Details of the district's new Transportation Advisory Committee, which brings together parents and staff members to discuss issues and safety concerns revolving around student transportation, were approved.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Larry Lobert announced the district is recommending Kathy Fredericks, secretary at , for the countywide Betty Campion Distinguished Support Service Award.
  • The board accepted the resignations of Waldon Middle School Music Teacher Cheryl Bongiorno and Christine Boyle, German teacher from the International Academy.
