Lake Orion Volleyball Falls to Rockford 0-3 in Class A State Finals

Despite its reputation as a comeback team following an , the Lake Orion Varsity Girls Volleyball team couldn't recover from a 2-set deficit Saturday afternoon and lost to the Rockford Rams 0-3 in the Class A State Championship game in Battle Creek, MI.

The Dragons were the first team in OAA history to make it to the state finals, and the team captured its first regional title since 1988. The road to the state finals included intense playoff matches against Clarkston, , and .

In the end, the unranked underdog Lake Orion team fell to No. 2 Rockford in three sets.

“The first two sets were really close," head coach Bob Howey said. "I thought we were playing really well those first two."

Rockford took the first set in a close 25-21 match. Lake Orion led throughout the second set until Rockford came back at the last minute, pulling off a 25-23 win against the Dragons to nab the second set.

“Rockford played unbelievably well,” Howey said. “It was one of the best high school games I’ve ever seen.”

The last-minute loss was a blow to Lake Orion's momentum, and Rockford dominated the third set, ending it 25-10 and earning the team its first-ever Class A state title.

The Lake Orion team still makes history as the school's best volleyball team and one of the best volleyball teams in OAA history.

“I’m proud of my girls,” Howey said. “I am proud of the legacy they have left.”
