Women's Excellence Offering Thyroid Testing and Exams at All Locations in Oakland County

January is Thyroid Disease Awareness Month and Women’s Excellence is offering thyroid testing at all locations in January and all throughout the year. With women being more prone then men to develop thyroid disease, regular testing is recommended.

We routinely order TSH testing for our patients as part of their annual visit and we frequently diagnose overactive and underactive thyroid. Underactive thyroid in women is common and easily treated with medication.

The thyroid gland is at the base of the neck just below the Adam’s apple and produces two main hormones called T3 and T4. These hormones travel in the blood to all parts of the body controlling the rate of many activities in the body, including how fast the body burns calories and how fast the heart beats. All of these activities together are known as the body’s metabolism. A thyroid that is working right will produce the right amounts of hormones needed to keep the body’s metabolism working at a rate that is not too fast or too slow.

Women are more likely then men to develop thyroid disorders. Thyroid disorders that can affect women include: hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, thyroid cancer, and goiter. Thyroid disorders can be hard to diagnose because their symptoms can be linked to many other health problems. Testing the level of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood can reveal whether the thyroid is overactive or underactive. Depending on the results of the TSH, the doctor can then decide if additional testing is needed and if treatment is required. According to Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, founder and physician at Women’s Excellence, “We routinely order TSH testing for our patients as part of their annual visit and we frequently diagnose overactive and underactive thyroid. Underactive thyroid in women is common and easily treated with medication. We can also detect other thyroid problems via lab testing and physical exam and can refer patients for appropriate treatment”.
