‘Orchard of Hope’ Could Harvest 280,000 Pounds of Apples Over Next 25 Years

The orchard, created by a partnership between Forgotten Harvest and Blake's Big Apple in Armada, is expected to produce thousands of pounds of apples for hungry children and families in Metro Detroit each year.

It will be three years before the first apples are ready to be picked, but with 250 trees to start, Forgotten Harvest’s recent partnership with Blake’s Big Apple in Armada could produce more than 280,000 pounds of fresh fruit for Metro Detroit’s hungry over the next 25 years.  “There are 800,000 people in the tri-county area who face hunger or a lack of food daily,” said John Owens, Forgotten Harvest communications director. “Our goal is to get 1,000 trees out here, and we see no reason why that can’t happen. How Do You Like Them Apples? Orchard's Produce to Relieve Detroit Hunger

Forgotten Harvest is partnering with Blake's Big Apple in Armada to plant and harvest the first "Orchard of Hope," which will grow thousands of pounds of apples for children and families in Metro Detroit.

Forgotten Harvest, in partnership with Blake Farms, has developed the Plant a Tree for Hunger program, through which 250 apple trees will be planted in the first “Orchard of Hope” on the grounds of Blake’s Big Apple in Armada. The Orchard of Hope, made possible by a one-acre donation of land from Blake's, is expected to produce thousands of pounds of apples that will be used to feed children and families in Metro Detroit. “We are extremely grateful for this gift of land to plant the trees from the Blake family,” said Susan Goodell, president and CEO of …

Trip to Grocery Store Could Help Feed a Child in Need

Hiller's Market and Hollywood Market are teaming up with hunger relief agencies to help feed more than 300,000 children healthy meals this summer.

Local grocery stores want to make sure the 300,000 southeast Michigan schoolchildren who receive free or reduced-fee lunches during the school year don’t go hungry this summer. With the launch of the 10-week Hunger Free Summer campaign,  Gleaners Food Bank and Forgotten Harvest are trying to provide an additional 2 million meals to children this summer. Every dollar raised during the summer campaign translates into eight nutritious meals for a child. The agencies have teamed up with Hiller’s Market and Hollywood Super Markets to raise funds and awareness about their summer program. Volunteers will be at various Hiller’s and Hollywood locations over the next few weekends accepting donations and handing out bracelets, balloons, stickers and …
