Proximity is the mother of promotion.
For the first time ever, the Lake Orion and Oxford Downtown Development Authorities are teaming up this holiday season to remind shoppers to shop local, including that other downtown just a few miles away. The two small downtowns are less than three miles apart and are similar in their eclectic mix of small, independent retailers. DDA Executive Directors Suzanne Perreault of Lake Orion and Madonna Van Fossen of Oxford decided to work together to draw consumers from other regions of the county and entice locals to rediscover their downtowns. “It just makes sense,” Perreault said. “Given our close proximity, there is no reason that shoppers can’t make a stop in both downtowns this season. Both communities really have a lot to offer.” Van …

Residents got their first peek at the new boutique at Tuesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The way Alaina Campbell sees it, stepping into Simply Marcella in downtown Lake Orion is like stepping into a shop in Paris. Campbell, the executive director of the Orion Area Chamber of Commerce, expressed her excitement just before the ribbon cutting ceremony, officially welcoming Simply Marcella to the downtown business district. “We’re so happy to be here,” Marcella Costin, owner of the new Lake Orion business said. After running a successful business in St. Clair, Costin decided it was time to open a second store, opting for the storefront at 34 S. Broadway. "I feel relieved and ecstatic," Costin said of opening her second store. "I hope that everything goes smoothly and people love this store as much as we do." Simply Marcella is a …

Village officials decide to vote on cutting lifeguards and how to deal with their loss and to drafting an ordinance on liquor permits.
Would you let your children swim at Green's Park without lifeguards? Would you be happy if your neighbor hosted a block party when you had to work early in the morning? Green's Park lifeguards and issuing one-day liquor licenses were the hot topics on Lake Orion Village Council's agenda during Monday's meeting at Village Hall. Green's Park is over budget by more than $6,000, so a tentative decision to eliminate lifeguards was discussed at a previous council meeting. Lake Orion Village Manager Paul Zelenak was asked to list procedures that would be taken to make up for their absence, including: Others were concerned about the elimination of lifeguards, such as Village Council President Ken Van Portfliet, who believes the lifeguards did a …
