Art Center’s Holiday Market Opens

Santa will stop by Dec. 9 and 16.

A creative, stress-free holiday shopping experience awaits at the Orion Art Center’s 12th annual holiday market, which opened Nov. 29. The market is located next to Diamond Dave’s at 424 South Lapeer Road (across from McDonald’s) in Lake Orion. It’s guaranteed to be one of a kind because it brings together original art in various mediums from local artists. “It’s a wonderful way to support local artists and small businesses,” said art center director Lauren Dinneweth. “To find something truly unique and special for someone for Christmas, that’s hard to do. As artists were setting up the market this week, shelves were stocked with jewelry, pottery, painting, cards, textiles, photography, clothing and more. Charlotte Wall was hanging pins …

Portraits and pottery in one art show might not seem like an obvious pairing. But it’s a tradition at the Orion Art Center, where the sixth annual Portraits and Pottery Show had its opening Thursday night. “I know it’s unusual,” said OAC Director Lauren Dinneweth. But she told a full house gathered for the opening reception that she loves this show. “To be able to look at a person and capture their essence … is something truly special,” she said. “And it’s not easy. Even the artists among us will tell you it’s not easy to do.” Dinneweth found a uniquely qualified juror for the show. Christine Laikind is an adjunct professor at the Center for Creative Studies. A painter, she also owns Firebrick Gallery and Pottery Studio in Rochester. “She …

Are You Facebook Friends With the Lake Orion Dragon?

This friendly beast wants to be your friend ... on Facebook. The Dragon on the Lake is looking to connect with who want to know more about the festival taking place Aug. 24 - 26.

Here's what happens when you give a Dragon access to Facebook: "Dragons love classic rock and 80's music." "A dragon walks into Sagebrush..." "What's a dragon gotta do to get to 500 likes?"  "'Nobody puts baby dragon on a corner' — Original Swayze movie quote before I bowed out." Oh, that Dragon on the Lake is a funny one. The Dragon has been hard at work lately posting status updates like these to people who "Like" his Facebook page. In addition to jokes and quips about '80s pop culture, the Dragon is also keeping fans up to speed on the upcoming Dragon on the Lake 2012 festival, which is Aug 24-26. Who is this mystery dragon and why is he on Facebook? Patch recently asked the dragon himself and got this reply from him: "It's a little …
