Except for a voter-approved bump in police funding, the millage rate is the same as 2012.
The 2013 budget will be the subject of a public hearing before the Orion Township Board of Trustees on Monday, Dec. 17. After the hearing, the board is expected to adopt the budget in this, its last scheduled meeting of the year. The board held two special budget workshop sessions on Dec. 5 and 12. The proposed budget calls for a millage levy of 6.5809 for township operations, including the library. That’s up 1.0168 from 2012 due to voter approval of an increase in police funding. There is some good news for customers of the water system. Because the township built a water reservoir to reduce demand during peak times, the rate the township pays the city of Detroit for water will go down. In a memo, Orion Public Works Director Bill Ireland …

The 2013 budget and the senior center are also on Monday's agenda.
The new Orion Township Board of Trustees will get down to business with its first meeting on Monday, Dec. 3. The board will take public comment on a proposed Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate for a facility on Kay Industrial Drive. HiLite International is asking for five-year tax abatement in order to establish its North American research and development center in the township. The company plans to invest $125,000 in improvements to leased property and $3 million in new personal property, all to be completed in 2013-2014. In 2009, the township created an industrial development district on the site, which under a 1974 state law set the stage for a potential for tax abatement to encourage new activity on the site. If approved by …

A developer received approval Monday to swap for land where current fire station #2 sits
Residential development is picking up in Orion Township. Three developments received approvals Monday, and one of them sets the stage for a new fire hall. The township Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to amend an existing consent judgment governing the development of Heron Springs, a residential development proposed for the west side of Squirrel Road between Silver Bell and Dutton. Clerk Penny Shults cast the dissenting vote. According to Supervisor JoAnn Van Tassel, the plan agreed to Monday will bring 162 apartments, allow Palazzo di Bocce to expand its parking lot, add a passive park along Bald Mountain Road, and swap the township’s current fire-hall site on Silver Bell for three acres adjacent to an industrial park where a new, larger fire …

A last-ditch effort to scuttle a proposed 145-foot cell tower will come down to a vote Monday.
Two weeks ago, residents of the neighborhood at the northwest corner of Baldwin and Waldon pleaded with the Orion Township Board of Trustees not to approve Verizon’s request to erect a monopole near their homes. The board postponed the vote to gather more information about safety, particularly the fall zone around the proposed site. Since then, the township’s attorney, Daniel Kelly, engineering consultant OHM and the manufacturer of the monopole have all weighed in. “Our ordinances do not provide for any specific limitations based upon ‘fall zones,’” Kelly wrote in a letter to the board. He added that the proposed site is 230 feet from the nearest residential structure. James Stevens, an engineer from OHM, said he believes the tower “is in…

The Orion Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously in favor of getting the drugs off the shelves of local gas stations and stores.
At Monday night's Orion Township Board of Trustees meeting, board members passed a Synthetic Marijuana and Dangerous Products Emergency Ordinance banning the use and sale of designer drugs, such as K2 and Spice, within the township. By putting an emergency ordinance in place, the township is waiving the typical procedures of approving a first and second read of the ordinance, making the ordinance effective immediately. "If we adopt this tonight we've got a tool that our deputies can use beginning in the morning," Supervisor JoAnn Van Tassel said. Locally, citizens and groups such as North Oakland Community Coalition have been working hard to stop the sale of the drugs. Likewise, Oakland County officials recently announced an initiative …
D-Arcy Gonzales will be a member of the Orion Township Board of Trustees through Nov. 20.
Four candidates recently interviewed for the vacant trustee seat on the Orion Township Board of Trustees, with resident D-Arcy Gonzales being appointed to the position. The board voted 6-1 (Trustee Michael Flood voted no) in favor of Gonzales at Monday's board meeting. The other interested candidates included Orion Township residents Heather Muzzy, Donni Steele and Dale Romeo. Former Trustee Mark Crane resigned from the board after purchasing a house in Rochester Hills and his seat on the board officially became open on June 4. All seven board terms are coming to an end in November, and aside from Gonzales, all board …

The Orion Township Board of Trustees votes to address resident concerns before moving forward.
The Orion Township Board of Trustees received a lot of heat regarding the construction of a safety path on Indianwood Road at Monday night’s meeting at Orion Township Hall. After listening to a variety of complaints against the development, the board voted unanimously in favor of setting aside a formal decision on the project, and instead authorized Supervisor JoAnn Van Tassel to meet with the residents that would be impacted to address their concerns and try to come up with a solution that would appease them. The Township Attorney Dan Kelly and OHM Engineer David Schroeder will be joining Van Tassel on her visits. The motion directed that within 60 days Van Tassel would report her findings back to the board. “We will work with every …

The Orion Township Board of Trustees hope to appoint an interim trustee on Monday.
After current Orion Township Trustee Mark Crane decided to resign as trustee to move to Rochester Hills, the Orion Township Board of Trustees immediately started searching for interim trustee candidates. Four Orion Township residents Heather Muzzy, D-Arcy Gonzales, Donni Steele and Dale Romeo decided to toss their name into the ring, and were interviewed at a special board meeting on Wednesday night at Orion Township Hall. Crane's last meeting as trustee will be Monday night, when Supervisor JoAnn Van Tassel hopes to appoint an interim trustee to fill the soon-to-be vacant seat. The interim trustee will only take office until November, as it is an election year in Orion Township and residents will be voting in the general election to …
