Lake Orion Schools Will Outsource Custodial Services

“We did everything we could do,” said Custodian Kathy Sandstrom of trying to prevent the board from moving forward with privatizing.

Emotions were high at Wednesday’s Lake Orion Board of Education meeting as the board unanimously voted in favor of outsourcing its custodial services to save the district money. Custodians, along with their supporters in the audience, weren’t the only ones visibly shaken by the decision. Trustee Connie Meech, who voted in favor of outsourcing had trouble containing her emotions as well, fighting back tears as she explained she had been overly optimistic of the district's budget forecast and wished they didn't need to go down the road of privatizing the custodians. Like Meech, many board member said, “It wasn’t an easy decision.” A couple of the board members noted that they had been outsourced in previous positions and understood what the …

One additional thing. When it comes to UCS building security. Do not believe the UCS administration. Call your local police dept. (Sterling Heights or Utica). Ask them how many open schoool doors the've found. It happens a lot thanks to their Harvard lradership. She needs to pack her bags and go... Anywhere but UacS.   more ›

Outsource Custodial Services to Flint Company, Lake Orion School Board Advised

Board of Education plans to vote on the recommendation at its June 13 meeting.

Calling the decision "not an easy one," Lake Orion Community Schools officials on Wednesday night recommended the district's custodial services be outsourced. John Fitzgerald, assistant superintendent of business and finance for Lake Orion Community Schools, advised the Lake Orion Board of Education that The DM Burr Group be the contracted agency. The recommendation was meant to serve as a first reading for the school board and was based on input received from committee members heading the custodial vendor search. Fitzgerald and Lake Orion Superintendent Marion Ginopolis gave a thorough presentation at Wednesday's meeting at the administration building, explaining motives for looking into private vendors and benefits of moving in that …

Well Lake Orion, hows the privitization working for you so far. I heard it's costing a bundle. I hear you bit off a little more than you chew. Not only that, the theft by some of these employees is running rapid. I heared Ginopolis said it was no different that the former employees. Wrong Ginopolis. The former employees who were custodians hired by the district never stole from you. You are …   more ›

Lake Orion Student Presents Petition Against Privatizing Custodial Services

School district continues research and interviews for companies being considered to take on the schools' janitorial duties.

Saying Lake Orion High School students would miss their caring custodians, junior Gina Hensley handed a petition signed by more than 200 of her peers and teachers protesting the Board of Education's move to privatize custodial service to the board at Wednesday's meeting. After detailing how the decision to privatize would negatively impact the students and staff, Hensley handed the petition to board member Connie Meech. “There are many people at LOHS that wish to keep their current custodians because we love them so much,” Hensley said. “Not only do they clean our schools, they bring smiles to our faces and brighten up our days.” Hensley explained some of the day-to-day encounters with custodians, noting the Lake Orion custodians truly go …

I am a Lake Orion taxpayer. I voted for the millages to pay for new buildings that were needed for our students. I do not want the care and maintenance of these facilities to be handed off to privatization. I have seen other schools with shabby buildings after the school board made the mistake of privatizing custodial services. I do not want my tax dollars wasted. Keep the staff who know and care…   more ›

Lake Orion Schools Evaluate Bids from 3 Custodial Vendors

Board of Education gets ready to interview the businesses as current employees fight plan to privatize services.

Of the several private custodial vendors who responded to Lake Orion Community Schools' request for proposal (RFP), there are three vendors being evaluated, in addition to the existing union custodians serving the district. John Fitzgerald, assistant superintendent of business and finance for the district, gave a status update at Wednesday night’s Lake Orion Board of Education meeting stating the district is gearing up for the interview process. Fitzgerald noted that given the raw numbers submitted by the three privatized vendors being considered, the costs would reduce by about $1.5 million annually. However, Fitzgerald said there is still analysis to be done and reviewing the service that each entity offers is important. At Tuesday’s …

Mari-Ann Henry, it is because full time employee's receive benefits. It is not about the hourly rate. Private compainies do not give benefits. Do we really need 47 more families without insurance? Why is the benefits and wages of the people at the top not being cut? Lake Orion Custodians do not make more than the average custodians. The entire staff from top to bottom needs to take cuts to make …   more ›
