Sisters' Big Donation Will Fund Much-Needed Upgrade for Library

Have you noticed the worn carpet around the Rochester Hills Public Library? A $205,000 gift will replace it this year.

A gift from the estate of two Rochester Hills sisters will help the Rochester Hills Public Library perform a much-needed upgrade this year. The library will be re-carpeted and some furniture will be re-upholstered thanks to a $204,818 gift from the estate of Mary and Lenore Cavanagh. The gift was received last week, according to Library Director Christine Hage. Mary died in December. Lenore died in 2011 at the age of 96. Hage said the carpet will be replaced as early as this summer. On both floors of the library, there is evidence of the carpet wearing thin; in the circulation room behind the front desk, carpeting has been torn up and used to replace worn areas in the more public areas of the library. “With over 2,000 visitors a day for …

Big Blue Bus on the Road in Rochester

The Rochester Hills Public Library dedicates its second bookmobile; this one is for early readers.

Big Blue is ready for readers. The Rochester Hills Public Library's new bookmobile, dubbed the Big Blue Bus, is stocked with books and is taking to the road. It's the library's second bookmobile and was purchased from the Willard Public Library in Battle Creek with funds bequested from the Doris and Charles Edie Estate. Have a Question for McMillin? He's in Town Next Week

State Rep. Tom McMillin will be at Township Hall in Oakland Township on Monday.

There will be numerous opportunities for Oakland Township residents to meet state Rep. Tom McMillin (R-Rochester Hills) in the coming week. Two property tax town hall meetings are scheduled in the area, and McMillin will sponsor office hours Monday at Township Hall to meet with residents. Residents do not need to make appointments. If you are unable to meet McMillin during the office hours or see him in action at the town hall meetings, you can still get in touch with him. Former Rochester Hills Librarian Now Heads Orion Township Library

Karen Knox has stepped in as the library's new director after the retirement of Linda Sickles.

After six years at the Rochester Hills Public Library as associate director and information technology manager, Karen Knox decided to take the open director position at the Orion Township Public Library. Former Director Linda Sickles retired at the end of January after working at the library for 31 years. Knox, who officially began the job Feb. 6, said she is excited about her new venture. Budget and technology issues are at the top of her priority list now that she has settled in as director. Author Sandra Brown Will Speak in Rochester Hills Next Month

Her newest bestseller, "Lethal," has been chosen as the southeast Michigan "Everyone's Reading" book for 2012.

Bestselling suspense author Sandra Brown will speak in Rochester Hills next month as part of a regional book club program intended to bring southeast Michigan together through reading. Brown's Lethal has been chosen as the 2012 Everyone's Reading book. Everyone's Reading is sponsored by libraries in Oakland and Wayne counties; this is the 11th year of the program, which is intended to promote dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book. Past books have included The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly and Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow. The Rochester Hills Public Library is one of 13 libraries participating in the program.
