Blossom Ridge Referendum Pushed To May

Three attorneys. Three opinions. Now there will be a fourth.

After its second closed meeting in as many weeks, the Oakland Township Board of Trustees voted at a special meeting Monday to seek a fourth legal opinion regarding a rezoning granted for the proposed Blossom Ridge senior housing development. The board will also seek an opinion from the Michigan Attorney General and is now hoping to put the referendum on the rezoning on the May ballot, not February as originally intended. “I think it is incumbent upon us to do as much due diligence as we can to represent the citizens and do it right,” said supervisor Terry Gonser. “It’s unfortunate in my mind that we can’t go forward on Feb. 26. … I’ve always felt it was better to be right than fast.” Last week, the newly elected board received a letter …

Attorney Says Blossom Ridge Referendum is Invalid

A special meeting has been called for Monday, Dec. 3.

An attorney representing a group of Oakland Township residents has found a procedural flaw in the rezoning approved for the controversial Blossom Ridge senior-housing development. In a letter to the township, he said both the rezoning and the subsequent petition drive to overturn it are invalid. The township’s new board of trustees, meeting for the first time Tuesday, went into closed session to hear Township Attorney Steven Joppich’s opinion on the letter. Apparently the two opinions differ, because after the hour-long closed session the board returned to open session and voted to hire a third attorney to give it yet another opinion. The residents’ attorney, Gregory Need, said an Oakland County zoning committee never received notice of …

Holt Wins Orion School Board Seat; Gonser Cruises in Oakland Township

Orion Township turnout was 73.27 percent.

Bill Holt won an open seat on the Lake Orion Community Schools Board of Education Tuesday, defeating Angela Nasso. The vote was 7,560 for Holt to 6,713 for Nasso. Both were running for office for the first time. Holt will take the seat being vacated by board President Mary Jo Burchart, who did not run for re-election. Turnout was 73.27 percent. Holt is president of the Greater Oakland Republican Club. “I’ve been involved in politics since I was in high school,” he said. “There were no surprises in that respect. It’s exciting to have it over. And now we move on to governing.” Nasso, who has four young children, said the campaign “was a lot of hard work. It’s a lot different than I thought it would be. … But it’s been fun.” Former school-…

Fogler Running as Write-In For Oakland Township Supervisor

‘I’m not finished yet,” she says.

Oakland Township Supervisor Joan Fogler is running as a write-in candidate to try to keep the seat she lost in the August primary. Fogler lost to Terry Gonser by 547 votes, with 31 percent of the township’s registered voters participating. Because there are no Democratic candidates, Gonser’s is the only name on the ballot. Fogler said she filed a declaration of her intent to run as a write-in with Oakland County on Friday, the deadline for the Nov. 6 election. “I’m not finished yet,” she said. “I still love Oakland Township. I’ve lived here 58 years and I think I’ve done a good job. “It was just a couple of issues that made me lose the election. … Since I’ve been supervisor, we have gotten a AAA bond rating with the state. We are one of …

Joan Fogler used her position as Township Supervisor to protect her family’s interests and the family farm business that they operate on Rochester road. Anyone that threatened that business or created competition the Township would improperly use its governmental powers to shut them down. Terry Gonser Announces Candidacy for Oakland Township Supervisor Position

GM retiree hosts open house Wednesday night, letting supporters know he hopes to unseat current supervisor Joan Fogler and push for changes.

Oakland Township residents attended an open house Wednesday night at WestWynd Grille to support supervisor candidate Terry Gonser. Gonser was raised in Oakland Township, graduated from Rochester High School and is retired after working more than 30 years as an engineering manager for General Motors. He serves as president for the Rochester Area Republican Club, is a member of the Greater Oakland GOP and formerly worked for the U.S. Army Weapons Command. Now, Gonser hopes to put the "trust" back into the Board of Trustees, according to his campaign. During Wednesday's open house, Gonser gave a speech and highlighted some of the things he would change and focus on if elected this year, including: Oakland Township resident Nancy Salvia was …
